Advocacy and training in sustainable development leadership competences

The traditional forces of change go by the acronym PESTE, namely political, economic, social, technological, and ecological. However, sustainable development is the underlying contemporary force driving the changing business environment leading to a PESTES framework, where S stands for Sustainability. There is a need to ensure that leadership possess competences that synchronise with the changing business environment driven by sustainable development. As argued elsewhere, the future belongs to organisations that make sustainable development a business strategy. Also, competitive advantage will accrue to companies that make sustainability a goal. In 2011, Donald Brown and Donald Harvey predicted that the only companies that will win in the future are ones managed by leaders possessing adaptive and flexible skills to respond quickly to the changing business environment. We have developed a model that we use to assist organisation identify key leadership competences suitable for driving sustainable development for themselves. We train business to adopt the leadership competence framework for sustainable development (LCFSD), developed by us, as a toolkit for developing leadership competences that will enable the organisation to contribute to SDGs for the good of future generations. The LCFSD optimises organisational sustainability. We help create a leadership mindset and practices that thinks about future generations. We inculcate intergenerational systemic behaviour that is anchored on presencing as a competence.

Strategic planning in the context of sustainable development

The United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 requires businesses to be partners in the operationalisation of the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The new world order demands organisations to think sustainable development in the entire strategic management process. The SDGs are identifiable with all the external business environments and are regarded as the ‘think about issues’ when conducting a strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis. SDGs integrate political, economic, social, technological, and ecological considerations through the inclusivity approach whose core principle is that “no one will be left behind”. We offer strategic planning services that are contextualised to sustainable development. We integrate SWOT analysis and sustainable development goals (SDGs) using the 6Ps framework. The 6Ps are people, prosperity, planet, peace, partnerships, and profit. This is a unique model designed by us to assist organisation in integrating SGs into the business strategy. The 6Ps framework emanates from the 5Ps framework, which is the foundation of the 17 SDGs, namely people (SDGs1 – 6), prosperity (SDGs 7 – 11), planet (SDGs 12 – 15), peace (SDG16), and partnerships (SDG17). The future belongs to organisations that make sustainable development a business strategy. We are ready to take you there. We will enable your organisation to focus on specific SDGs that align with your core activities and competences. We will assist in developing this strategic plan that integrates sustainable development.

Leadership and management coaching

Ordinarily, leaders should possess certain traits and skills in each situation to be effective and successful. We are motivated by this trait theory because it differentiates other individuals from leaders. In great man trait theory, it is argued that the capacity for leaders is inherent, meaning great leaders are born, not made. Whilst, in behavioural theories, it is believed that good leaders can be made and not born. However, traits create distinctive advantages in a leader’s competence behaviour, and that behaviour accounts for the bulk of leadership effectiveness. We capitalise on the contradiction of trait and behavioural theory and integrate the two theories to create high breed coaching. We assist leaders and managers in acquiring traits through motivation, advancement, and growth. We coach leaders and managers to understand the importance of context and the use of situational leadership style. We use the Hugh Flanagan and David Thompson’s “model of managerial leadership” that applies to any leadership situation. We make our clients understand that “all leaders are managers but not all managers are leaders” by explaining the togetherness of transactional management and transformational leadership whose mix depends on the situation as explained in the model. We coach clients in sustainable development leadership to create a mindset that thinks of future generation and a mindset that is socially responsive instead of being socially responsible.
